What Kind of Weed Trimmer Should I Get for My Lawn?

Well it's Spring time and you might have already been looking into buying a new string trimmer, (or weedeater) for cutting grass.

Today I want to recommend a weed trimmer that I have used for years and has done very well.  Please consider getting this kind of string trimmer before you go out and buy an el cheapo from Mega-Low Mart or something.  I'll explain in a moment.

  • The weed trimmer I highly recommend is an SRM-230 made by Echo.  You can find this weed trimmer at a local lawn mower repair shop.  I do believe in supporting local smaller businesses so give them some business!  Home Depot does have Echo products if you choose to shop there.

The Echo SRM-230 does a great job in performance, and if you take good care of it, it will last for a long time. I've cut for hours and hours with an SRM-230 through lots and lots of grass and even heavy grown areas.  I think it's pretty good even though it's not a SUPER heavy duty weed trimmer.

  • Save time, money, and hassle by choosing a weed trimmer that is commercial.

One of the benefits of choosing a commercial trimmer over some cheap crap is it is SO much easier to change the trimmer line out.  With the SRM-230, it's a simple twist, load the string, and twist it back on.
What I've seen with a lot of cheap weed trimmers is that it's easy for the spool to just pop off and you have a lot of string get tangled everywhere.  They are complicated to change out, and some even require a tool to get the spool off.

A lot of cheap weed trimmers also won't run for long.  Before you know it you might make a trip (or five) back to Mega-Low Mart to return it.  Imagine all the time and gas money you are spending on your travels.

I used to work at a lawn mower repair shop and I would often pick up the cheaper lawn equipment from big stores, NEW, BEFORE THEY WERE EVEN SOLD, so they could be repaired.

  • Curved Shaft Trimmers - I've also heard several times from mechanics and some landscapers to not get curved shaft trimmers.  I'm not sure why but I just hear they are more of a hassle.  Get one with a straight shaft.

There are cheaper models for Echo, and also one designed for homeowners.  It is cheaper in price too.  You will just have to check it out.

The price of an Echo SRM-230 is $289, but it's well worth the cost over the years plus saves you the hassles of the El Cheapos.  This is based on my personal experience.

If you have any more information or recommendations, please feel free to post a comment!

Important Factors When Mowing the Lawn!

Hey what's up! Today I want to tell you about two important factors to consider when mowing your lawn.

They are:
  1. the height of the cut
  2. frequency of cutting

If you want your lawn to look its best, find out what species your grass is. Then cut it at the height for growth that is best for that species.

Keep your lawn properly mowed because it will encourage dense growth. The more dense, the better it will beat off those nasty weeds that are competing for sunlight and nutrients.

When your lawn is weak and thin, it allows the seeds of the weeds to germinate and grow! Now you don't want that do ya?!

When you go out to mow, cut one-third of the grass height.

So if your grass species is best cut at 2 inches, cut off one inch when it is 3 inches tall.

More than this and you will find yourself watering more because it will stop the roots from growing.

So keep it mowed regularly and at a height that is best suited for the type of grass you have.

Below is a video I found with some more tips to help you with your lawn and yard care.

Thanks for stopping by my new blog and please feel free to join in for daily discussion on the new fan page on Facebook.

This blog was mainly created for my friends and neighbors in Rock Hill, South Carolina, but anyone's welcome to visit. But this video I believe is from Colorado because he mentions Boulder. The tips he gives I believe can apply to us here in SC, so enjoy:

How to Sharpen Lawn Mower Blades

I found this video on Youtube about how to sharpen your lawn mower blades because it's important is the mowing season takes off.

It's important to keep your blades sharpened for a number of reasons.

One of those is because when you cut grass with dull blades, instead of making a clean cut, a dull blade will tear the grass, and this will leave your lawn vulnerable to diseases!

Plus it just looks better when you get a clean smooth cut.

Now, one of the things he mentions in the video is that he likes to mow when it is raining or after a fresh rain.

I've heard different. I've heard that this is not good for your mower, so I avoid it if I can.

It's just something I will have to do some more research on, but feel free to leave a comment below to share what you think or know:
